The phrase “Mile High Club” is used to describe people who have had sex (or other intimate activities) on an airplane. The toilet is usually chosen for this process, and airlines strongly oppose it. But is it legal?
It turns out that there is no clear answer to this question. Firstly, it must be emphasized that sex on board is contrary to the rules of virtually all airlines. There should not be two people in the toilet if it is not necessary (help for the disabled, children with parents – this is not a problem), and respect for other passengers is simply self-evident.
In other words, airlines that find out that a couple is having sex in the toilet can never ban these people from using their services.
Slightly different views are observed in airplanes, the first class of which consists of separate rooms. Sex may still be against the airline’s rules, but if it doesn’t bother other passengers, no one will probably ever find out.
In addition, airlines can turn a blind eye to this because first-class passenger comfort (and enjoyment) is a top priority. Airlines want passengers who buy the most expensive tickets to return on other flights.
But the laws are a slightly different matter.
The aircraft is subject to the law of the country in which it is located. In addition, during the flight, it is also subject to the law of the country in which the aircraft is registered, and passengers who infringe the rule can theoretically be penalized in accordance with their national law.
In the UK, for example, sex in public can be sentenced to six months in prison. Do you think this is too cruel a punishment for such a crime? In Latvia, on the other hand, a fine of 70 to 350 euros is imposed for sex in a public place.
Abuse of a member of the opposite sex on an aircraft registered in Saudi Arabia can also result in beatings. And it’s not even about sex here – even kisses can be considered unsuitable for public space.
On the other hand, in a European holiday destination in Dubai, even a married couple in public places (and therefore on a plane) has to be very reserved – kisses are not allowed.
Sex in public places is not legal in many countries, and the plane is considered a public place. So, although the rules are different, you can be sure – it is not legal. On the other hand, whether you receive a penalty depends on other passengers and crew members. Others tend to report it, while others look at such things with humor.
